The temperature continues to drop and as we start to move towards the colder months, you may start to feel a change with your body. You’re not alone. Getting out of bed in the morning can get a little more difficult when you’re feeling achy and stiff. The change in the weather plays a role in the way our bodies move and function. The temperature drop causes changes in barometric pressure, which causes pressure to weight bearing joints. The reduced air pressure leads to tissues within the joints to expand, causing pain especially with those who are already suffering from arthritis. Here at Petett Chiropractic, our Renton Chiropractors understand that the extra joint pressure can be an issue, especially when we all have busy schedules so here are some tips and tricks that can help alleviate the winter slump.
Get Moving
The last thing you probably want to do is to go outside in this cloud covered, rainy weather, but don’t let that stop you from getting regular exercise. The constant movement helps to loosen up your joints and muscles, which can alleviate the pain and stiffness.
Do What Makes You Happy
With the hours of daylight decreasing and the weather being constantly dreary, your mood significantly changes, which can make you more susceptible to pain. Make sure to take time out of your day or spend weekends doing activities that you really enjoy. Go hiking, visit a pumpkin patch, spend time with your family. The happier you are, the better your body feels.
Eat Healthy and Stay Hydrated
It’s important to maintain a healthy diet even though you’re surrounded by tons of great holiday food. The proper vitamins and minerals will decrease inflammation and give you the energy to keep moving. Drinking enough water is also important especially in the winter when there isn’t the heat to remind you how thirsty you are. Water allows your body function properly therefore making you feel less achy.
