Four Low-Impact Exercises for the New Year | Seattle Chiropractic Clinic

It’s that time of the year again! The New Year is almost here, and with it comes planning your resolutions. Many of us have the resolution to get healthy and fit. However, if not done correctly, working out can cause more harm on the body than good.

Our team at Petett Chiropractic recommend some low-impact workouts to try that are easy on the body, back and joints.

Hiking

Hiking is a great way to take the aerobic exercise of walking up a notch. Hit the hills or even keep things in low-grade terrain. We’re lucky to live in the Pacific Northwest, with great hiking trails and breathtaking sights. Pack a lunch, load up the car, properly stretch and enjoy a great day of hiking.

Rock Climbing

Climbing requires slow, controlled movements. It gives your muscles a serious workout without adding strain. There are some gyms that have built-in rock walls, or gyms that were made just for rock climbing. Most climbing gyms offer equipment rental so that you don’t need to purchase your own climbing gear. Rock climbing is a great way to keep your workout challenging for both your mind and your body, pushing you to the limit.

This workout will target your core, legs and arms, strengthening your sense of balance and your muscles.

Yoga

Practicing yoga not only helps build muscle, it reduces pain, boosts mood and encourages sleep. The best part is that it’s manageable for people of all ages and body types. If you are just starting out, don’t push yourself. Yoga is meant to be soothing, not to hurt.

Some yoga moves that you should add in your practice include:

  • Butterfly pose: This is a great move for stretching your hips, thighs and knees.
  • Cobra pose: Cobra pose will strengthen your shoulders, abdomen and glutes. This exercise can provide comfort to stressed muscles and improve flexibility.
  • Warrior II: Warrior II is a fantastic way to stretch every muscle in your body, and you will feel it. Just stretch out your arms and keep your eyes forward.

Biking

Who doesn’t enjoy a nice bike ride? Biking is a great workout that can be done either indoors or outdoors. Get a group together and sign up for your gym’s cycling class. Spin classes are excellent for some healthy competition while listening to heart-pounding music. Or jump on a machine and create your own exercise.

Hop on your own bicycle and start riding around town. You’ll get a great workout and also get to take in the sights.
